Free Time

Last week, one of my students gave me a movie to watch so I could understand the inside joke that goes on in that class period.

Yesterday, said student asked if I had watched it yet. I replied that I hadn't because I've been pretty busy. She stated, "That's what the weekends are for, Mrs. Schley. And really, what are you so busy with?"

Cue raging fire and demons.

What I wanted to say:

Well, my sweet, innocent 8th grader... Let me tell you.

Her name is Emma and she leaves little 'free time'. That sounds so mean, but I don't want it to be. I spend 97% of my awake time with Emma on the weekends. The other 3% is when she's sleeping. After this bout of rotavirus, we've been spending a lot of time just trying to get back to a routine that works for the three of us. After 2 weeks off, then another random week for sickness, Emma isn't yet used to her daily routine. For 2 straight days, she had a tantrum from 3-6. Then, we finally realized that she needed one more little nap at the end of the day. Parenting is a lot of trial and error. Sorry, Emma, but we seems to be doing a lot of error.

It was also '7:15 meeting' week. I hate morning meetings. I hate meetings.

However, I simply just said that sometimes I get really busy on weekends, too!

Then, another one of my sweet, innocent 8th graders said, "Mrs. Schley, you need to just lock yourself in your room and watch this movie. Take some food and your cell phone in case of an emergency. You deserve a break. You work really hard. Plus, you look really tired."

At that point I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

I promised them I would watch this stupid movie this weekend... That is, after we finish season 6 of LOST.
