Labor, Delivery, and ER

What a crazy past few days!

Monday: The back pain was beyond anything I had ever felt in my life and when I walked, I looked like my spine was in the shape of an S. I immediately got ahold of my sister who, after a long night working in the ICU, came over and took me to Urgent Care. The doctor there gave me a shot in the booty and some antibiotics to treat a UTI. Heather and I went to McD's to get some breakfast, came home, and slept the morning and afternoon away. I felt a little better by the time Jonathan came home, so I was hopeful for today.

Today: Woke up this morning and took a shower. I felt a little better, but laid back down. I fell asleep and Jonathan came to wake me up to tell me he was going to work. I sleepily said goodbye and fell back asleep. When I woke up, I decided I'd better get downstairs to do something. I went to go to the bathroom and someone stabbed me with a hot knife right in my lower back. I cried out and was afraid I was going to pass out. I made it back to my bed and immediately called my mom who I knew would pick up.  (Jonathan was at school, thinking I was ok, so he didn't have his cell phone out) She left work and came over. As I was waiting for her, all the worst case scenarios were going through my head. What if I'm in labor? It's too early! What if I have a tumor? My mom got to my house in record time. I called the triage nurse for my OB, who instructed me to immediately go to the ER. Kidney infections are nothing to mess around with. We got to the hospital and I was taken to Labor and Delivery. They made me pee in a cup and hooked me up to a fetal monitor and asked me a ton of questions, like if I am going to breast feed or if I brought a car seat. I realized they were ruling out labor. After 30 minutes, they got me a wheel chair and took me back to the ER. ER doc gives me pain meds, anti nausea pills, and put me in a bed (thank God). I had blood taken and ultrasound of my kidneys. Mom and I chatted for awhile. I honestly didn't even realize how long we were there. Everyone was so nice and helpful. Doc finally came in and told me that my ureters we all messed up, leading to the bacteria in my pee, and the intense back pain. He gave me a prescription and sent me on my way. Good thing, because at this point I was STARVING. Luckily, my wonderful husband had called to ask if I wanted something to eat. He had just gotten off of work ( a panic filled day, thanks to me). Got home, ate, wonderful husband got my meds and some treats. Mama went home (PS I have the best mom ever) and Jonathan and I have been relaxing on the couch.

Emma was a sassy sally during this entire endeavor. She made it known how much she despised being monitored or moved for an ultrasound. It made me smile knowing that she is ok. And even though I hate having a kidney infection, it is a relief to know what is wrong so that it can be treated. I can't wait to walk again without pain.

  1. Oh Bethie, how scary for you! I know I don't have to tell you anything; you'll take good care of yourself and you have a great support system. After this, the rest of your pregnancy will be all downhill. At least, that's my wish for you.
