Fall means seeing my family every Saturday, whether I like it or not. And honestly, I like it. January-August, we get lost in our own lives, meeting for holidays and birthdays, but we can go weeks without seeing each other. Not during the holy season. September-November and in December/January for the bowl game we meet once a week to watch Hawkeye football, reminisce, complain, pick on each other, etc.
It also has special meaning. It's what connects us to each other and to family far away. I didn't really know my grandpa, but in some odd way, I feel like it connects me to him as well.
We've started making our gatherings bigger, adding friends, but sometimes we bring it back to the Fab Five + (The original five + spouses and kids)
I didn't go to U of I, but I kind of did. I had surgeries to correct a cleft palate there. I think I'll always have a connection to Iowa City, even if I didn't spend my college years there. Once a Hawkeye, always a Hawkeye.
I am so glad that Emma is growing into this tradition with us. I'm glad she sees her family. Family can be overwhelming at times, but Emma sure is a lucky girl. And so am I.
Go Hawks!
